According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide rates in America are most likely increasing. “While this data is the most accurate we have, we estimate the numbers to be higher. Stigma surrounding suicide leads to under reporting, and data collection methods critical to suicide prevention need to be improved.” On average, there are 117 suicides per day. And for every suicide, there are 25 attempts. And these are people that are around us daily. Some may show signs, and we may not be aware. It’s important that we pay close attention to those who are connected to us, those who we see in passing, and those we come in contact with.

What to expect when you call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

It’s no guarantee we can save everyone who struggles with thoughts of suicide, however it’s our duty to do something. There a few ways that one can detect a person with suicidal tendencies. It may be a person who complains consistently about being a failure or someone who struggles with seeing the bright side of any situation. These may seem like little things, but over time it may magnify and increase. Many people struggle silently with depression, which can lead to suicide. If you notice a person you’re connected to isolate themselves on several occasions, or sporadic bouts of refusing to leave their home; it’s possible they may have these particular issues. People who suffer with suicidal thoughts may have feelings of inadequacy. They may feel as if they’re not good enough, failures, nothing around them seems to go right, and no one loves them.

It is very important that the people around them help them to see otherwise. We must show consistent love, helping them to dig deep and see what they have to offer. Check in with them often and allow them to be open and honest about their feelings. Lastly, assist them in seeking professional help.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide or need therapeutic assistance, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) for more information.
