Many years ago, Lauryn Hill came out with a song called Doo Wop (That Thing). A famous line from this song is, “why be a hard rock when you really are a gem?” As women, we don’t always see ourselves the way we really are. We must learn to accept ourselves for who really are, and not based on what others may say about us. What is a gem? The definition of a gem is, “something likened to or prized as such a stone because of its beauty or worth” or “a person held in a great esteem or affection.” We are beautiful creatures and for that we are prized and held with great esteem. It’s up to us to accept and declare who we are.

As women we tend to give of ourselves and often accept less than we deserve. Because of our loving and nurturing nature, we consistently do for others. We then begin to do things for ourselves because we desire to be strong and independent. Although this is an excellent thing, it can sometimes make it difficult for us to receive from others. In many cases, some feel they don’t deserve it. But that’s the furthest thing from the truth.

There is so much that we have to offer. We are gifted, talented, and have many others to reach through it. Anything that we have been given is because it’s rightfully ours. It’s no accident that we have the capabilities that we have, and that we possess what we possess. It’s for a greater purpose, and that purpose will bring forth a great reward.

Lastly, be comfortable in your own skin, be confident in who you are. Regardless of what your occupation may be, what you may look like, what your gifts are, and what they may not be; be comfortable with who you are. Be content where you are and with what you are. And if you desire more, keep working for it. But don’t sell yourself short, be proud of where you are.
