We all have seen it before, something so strong being broken by something as simple as a lie. The moment the lie is told it seems necessary, but when the truth comes to light and the damage has been done. Was it really worth it? Sometimes people lie to protect the feelings of a loved one, make themselves look better to others, they do not care, or they think it may be what is best to diffuse a bad situation. The problem with lying is that it is rarely simple. Lying is the easy part, keeping up with the lie is what causes the stress because it requires more lies to make it seem believable. Keeping up with your lies causes anxiety, stress, depression, headaches, upset stomach, and insomnia.

It’s never worth it to suffer with the burden of a lie because once the truth comes out, and it always does, you end up looking foolish. Though your intentions may be good, lying will always make you the villain. Instead of lying to protect the feelings of your loved one, face the truth with them and be there to support them through the pain. If you don’t care for the person you are lying to, still give them the truth for your own sake. Instead of lying to improve someone’s perception of you, accept your human qualities and live in the truth that you are not perfect. Lastly, never lie to diffuse a situation because it will resurface and that lie you told will only add fuel to the flame. The truth isn’t always glamorous, but compared to the cost of lying it’s always worth it.
