Superlife-Fasting and Spiritual Mojo!

The season of Lent has finally arrived. Many people are using this time to fast or sacrifice something to be in accordance with tradition. Unfortunately, many people are participating in Lent but unaware of how and why it is done. Fasting during Lent or sacrificing during Lent is only a small part of the forty day period. Other things have to be done to make the outcome of your sacrifice or fast successful. The Lenten season is a time to grow closer in your connection to God. Jesus remained in the wilderness for forty days and was able to resist temptation. The Lenten season is a way for Christians to rely on God for strength to resist temptation. In order to remain fully committed and aware of your promises to God during Lent, you must be fair. Choose something that is a challenge that will require your hard effort to resist. Some things that can be done over the Lenten period are:

Christopher West | What is Lent?

  • Prepare: Think about what you would like to accomplish during the Lenten season.
  • Fasting: This is the most popular. There are many ways to fast. Choose a fast that is safe for your health, but also fair to God.
  • Sacrifice: Many people say they will sacrifice, but only sacrifice things that they don’t really need. Remember the sacrifice of life that was given up for you? There is no way to compete with that ultimate act of love, but you can always try to remove the things you love that distract you from your relationship with God (social media, alcohol, cursing, gossip)
  • Giving: Practice giving during the Lenten season. Share something with someone who least expects it, volunteer in your community, or let go of your attachment to certain material possessions.
  • Pray: This is the most important factor during the Lenten season. Take more time throughout the day to talk with God. Write down things you want to pray about, and keep a journal to document your journey growing closer to God.
