At one point or another, we have all watched movies or television shows displaying a person with a personality disorder. Some of us may even know someone who is suffering with a personality disorder. Whatever the case, personality disorders are always easy to identify. Although there are extreme cases of personality disorder, there are some that aren’t as detectable as others.

Personality disorder can stem from different sources. The most common source can derive from early childhood. There are many traumatic occurrences that may be the cause of a person’s discomfort around others. For example, if someone witnessed a violent robbery in their home as a child, they may possibly have characteristics of this disorder. It may also be a genetic trait.

Personality disorder is when one has difficulty engaging, interacting, or simply being around other people. The person who suffers with this disorder may feel as if they are displaying normal behavior, however, they aren’t able to deal with other people or things that maybe out of their normal routine.

There are also different types of personality disorders as well, which are broken down into clusters. Cluster A is summed up as odd disorders. Cluster B, dramatic or emotional behavior. Lastly, cluster C, anxious or fearful behavior. Each level increases. There are many specific disorders that fall under each of these clusters as well.

One can only be diagnosed with a personality disorder by a professional; however, there may be signs to detect the disorder. Signs to keep an eye out for are extreme distress, the inability to function properly, and difficulty being in the presence of others. Some cases are more easily to pick up on than others.

Although personality disorders can be very difficult to deal with for those suffering from them and those close to someone dealing with them, there is treatment. Medication can be prescribed by a physician that can help calm the symptoms a little, and keep them stable. One can also attend psychotherapy; whether it is an individual, a family, or within a group setting. Another approach to support someone around you who has been diagnosed is to learn as much as you can about the disorder and be with them every step of the way.
